Political Specialist

Location: Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Position Summary:

The U.S. Mission in Tegucigalpa seeks a Political Specialist to provide analysis, advice, and reporting on political and human rights issues in Honduras. The position supports the Ambassador, DCM, and Political Section, and advances U.S. policy objectives through research, relationship-building, and advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

Analyze and report on Honduran political, legal, and human rights developments

Advise on sensitive political issues and recommend courses of action

Monitor legislative activity and election cycles, reporting on key developments

Develop and maintain relationships with senior government, civil society, and academic contacts

Prepare briefing materials, talking points, and biographic information for senior-level meetings

Participate in high-level meetings and draft meeting summaries

Support Embassy efforts on rule of law, anti-corruption, labor, and human rights initiatives

Assist in formulating and implementing strategies to advance U.S. policy objectives

 

Required Qualifications:

Experience:

FSN-9/FP-5 (Steps 1–4): Minimum 4 years of progressively responsible experience in politics, political analysis (academic, NGO, or media), law, or a related field

FSN-10/FP-5 (Steps 5–14): Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the above fields

Education: University degree in political science, public policy, international relations, law, or journalism

Languages:

English: Fluent (Reading/Writing/Speaking) – may be tested

Spanish: Fluent (Reading/Writing/Speaking) – may be tested

Job Knowledge:

Thorough knowledge of Honduran legal and political institutions, power structures, political parties, and history

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to develop and maintain relationships with senior-level contacts

Strong writing skills in English and Spanish (may be tested)

Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and Access

Ability to translate technical documents and serve as an interpreter

Other Requirements:

Must be able to obtain and hold a security certificate

Subject to background investigation and possible pre-employment medical exam

Must be able to begin work within a reasonable time of agency authorization/clearance
