Duties
Basic Function of Position:
The gardener is responsible for performing gardening care and grounds maintenance at Mission office facilities including associated agencies, as well as other U.S. Government (USG) owned and leased properties as directed and at the official residences of the Principal Officials at post. Performs other duties as assigned.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Plans, schedules, and participates in the gardening work as assigned including but not limited to soil preparation, planting, pruning, trimming, staking, cultivating, weeding, transplanting, of trees, lawn turf, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, and hedges. Performs other gardening work as required.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements:
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two (2) years of gardening experience is required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Good working knowledge of how to plant/transplant shrubs, flowers etc. typical for the area required. Maintenance of gardens and lawns using knowledge of gardening and swimming pool cleaning techniques are required.
Education Requirements:
Completion of primary school is required.
Evaluations:
LANGUAGE: Rudimentary Knowledge (Reading/Writing/Speaking) in English is required. Limited Knowledge (Reading/Writing/Speaking) in Spanish is required. (This may be tested)
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to physically able perform arduous tasks as well as work independently. Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment and vehicles, such as mowers, sprinklers, etc. Ability to use all gardening tools and swimming pool, cleaning equipment. Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment such as eyewear, and safety shoes. Must be able to perform assign tasks in all types of weather, and environmental weather conditions to include at times severe cold, extreme heat, wet or dry weather conditions, and high winds.

Qualifications:
All applicants applying for a position for which a given language or skill is indicated as “This may be tested” in the Vacancy Announcement, have the option of being tested in-house or must attach a copy of the results of a valid language test to their application in the Electronic Recruitment application (ERA) to be eligible for consideration.
External language test scores must be attached to the application before the job announcement’s closing date; otherwise the applicant, if otherwise qualified, will be required to undergo in-house testing.
All external test scores completed by other U.S. Government entities, including other embassies or consulates, and third-party vendors must be on official letterhead and have the applicant’s full-name, date of test, and scores received. Scores older than five (5) years old will not be accepted. (See below for exceptions).
HR will accept and convert to the MCLASS scale the following types of language tests for English and/or Spanish:
▪ The Cambridge-Michigan English Language Assessment or “CAMLA.” Either the online or paper version will be accepted.
▪ Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), used by Foreign Service Institute and other U.S. Government language testing organizations.
▪ Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
▪ CEFR
▪ Michigan English Test (MET)
▪ Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE)
▪ Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)
▪ Berlitz
Note: U.S. Embassy Tegucigalpa will not pay for off-site skills testing nor certifications that are accepted in lieu of testing. This is a personal expense.
Exception to Mandatory Testing:
▪ Internal and External applicants who already have a qualifying test score that is less than 5 years old (This includes former employees of the Mission); and/or,
▪ Internal applicants are not required to test unless the skill or language levels of the VA are higher than the level of the employee’s current position.
▪ Applicants who have tested at a Level 4 through FSI or an accredited language test facility.
Minimum Testing Levels:
Post will test for Spanish and English forMClass2/2 (Limited Knowledge) and above. If a position requires a level 1/1, this will not be tested, but will be assessed during the interview process.
All test results from tests administered by post HR, including any tests administered by a third- party vendor/company on behalf of HR, or the appropriate SME in an office or agency under COM authority are valid five years from the date the test was administered, except as noted.
New testing may be required sooner because of licensing, certification, or other agency or host country requirements (e.g., firearms/weapons, medical, computer applications, other skill-specific testing).
