The Organization
The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) deliver
research-based solutions that harness agricultural biodiversity and sustainably transform food systems to
improve people’s lives. Alliance solutions address the global crises of malnutrition, climate change, biodiversity
loss, and environmental degradation.
The Alliance works with local, national, and multinational partners across Latin America and the Caribbean,
Asia and Africa, and with the public and private sectors. The Alliance is part of CGIAR, a global research
partnership for a food-secure future, dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security,
and improving natural resources and ecosystem services.
About the research opportunity
The Better Diets and Nutrition (BDN) Science Program is looking for a student enrolled in a master’s or PhD
program in the field of agricultural economics, anthropology, sociology, or related fields, interested in gaining
practical research experience in Latin America, specifically, Honduras. The visiting researcher should have
experience in research design, literature review, policy analysis, and qualitative (preferred) and/or quantitative
(desired) research methods. The visiting researcher will join a team that has researchers in Honduras and
Colombia, and though his/her contributions can be done remotely, it is expected that the visiting researcher
will travel to and within Honduras to participate in planned field activities. Experience in the agriculture field
is required, and experience in the use of artificial intelligence to conduct research will be a plus. The student
will lead certain activities and collaborate on other activities, as detailed below.
Required qualifications and experience
• Student in the final semesters at the master’s or PhD level (to be able to travel to and within Honduras).
• Experience in literature review, research design, and public policy analysis. Ability to lead interviews
with stakeholders, and to produce technical reports.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft Office suite software programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and tools for
text screening/analysis.
• Availability for travel to and within Honduras (at least two trips expected in 2025, which will be covered
by the BDN program).
• Being fluent in Spanish and English.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaborate with a comprehensive literature review and meta-analyses of selected publications.
• Lead an analysis of public policies related to improving diets and nutritional value of foods, reducing
food loss and waste, improving quality of foods, and support to the agricultural sector (selected value
chains) in Honduras.
• Lead qualitative data collection activities, including interviews with stakeholders.
• Systematize/document the information collected in each interview, focus group, or other activity, and
analyze it.
• Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and other research outputs.
• Assist in the integration of artificial intelligence tools and techniques into research processes, when
applicable.
Competences
• Ability to work collaboratively but also independently, in a multidisciplinary environment with
multicultural teams.
• Results oriented, proactive and innovative, adaptable.
• Effective communication, both orally and in writing.
Duration
The selected visiting researcher will start his/her engagement as soon as he/she is identified (and
administrative processes are finalized) and will last until December 2025. Depending on funding, this
collaboration may be extended. The selected individual will receive a stipend for his/her expenses. The Alliance
Bioversity International - CIAT offers a multicultural and academic research environment. We are an institution
that believes diversity contributes to excellence, promotes equal opportunities, and therefore does not
discriminate based on race, color, religion, gender, identity, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity, age,
marital status, or any other personal characteristic.
The selected visiting researcher may work remotely (this will be decided together) but must be available to
travel to Honduras at least twice in 2025.
