The Organization
The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
delivers research-based solutions that harness agricultural biodiversity and sustainably transform food
systems to improve people’s lives. Alliance solutions address the global crises of malnutrition, climate
change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.

With novel partnerships, the Alliance generates evidence and mainstreams innovations to transform
food systems and landscapes so that they sustain the planet, drive prosperity, and nourish people in a
climate crisis. The Alliance is part of CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food-secure future.

The project context
We are looking for a visiting researcher who will contribute to the Alliance’s research and engagement
work carried out in Honduras as part of a collaboration between two CGIAR research initiatives: Gender
Equality and Rethinking Food Markets. As part of these initiatives, the Alliance has developed a
methodology that uses an intersectional approach to typologize women's participation in supply
chains with the aim of supporting companies and other stakeholders to identify appropriate and better
targeted gender actions based on different women’s experiences. The methodology has been applied
with partners in one coffee supply chain and we are seeking to replicate the methodology in another
supply chain with new partners.

About the position
We are looking for a visiting researcher that will directly support field research on gender equality and
inclusion in food markets in Honduras.  The research will involve replicating  the gender typologies in
supply chains methodology developed by the Alliance in a new supply chain in a specific region of
Honduras. In close collaboration with Alliance scientists who developed the methodology, the country
team,  and partners, the researcher will conduct interviews, focus groups, and participant observation
to understand the supply chain, identify typologies of women in it, and how supply chain practices
impact women’s experiences of participation in the chain. The visiting researcher will be responsible
for carrying out qualitative fieldwork and qualitative analysis of the data collected, writing the research
report, and presenting the findings to partners.

Key Responsibilities
• Carry out qualitative fieldwork in rural areas of Honduras (areas to be determined).
• Lead the analysis of the data collected.
• Lead the writing of research report(s), summarize key findings, including the preparation of
graphics for data visualization.
• Contribute to presentations, consultations, and publications for diverse audiences.
• Contribute to the inclusion of a gender perspective in the research and learning agenda of the
office in Honduras.

Required qualifications and experience
• Pursuing/finishing a MSc or Ph.D. degree in a related social science field with a specialization or focus on gender.
• Experience carrying out field work using ethnographic qualitative tools, and analyzing semi-
structured interview and focus group data, preferably in a rural Latin American context.
• Demonstrated practical experience in value chain studies. Experience in the coffee value chain and
familiarity with implementing intersectional approaches would be an asset.
• Able to read and analyze interview data and literature in Spanish; able to find, read, and summarize
literature in English; and able to discuss and write research results in English for diverse audiences.
Fieldwork will be conducted and analyzed in Spanish but discussions within the research team will
be in Spanish and English; results will be shared in both languages.
• Ability to travel to Honduras for fieldwork (for a period of at least 5 weeks) is required.

Terms of appointment
This visiting researcher position will be based at the CIAT office in Tegucigalpa, Honduras during
fieldwork and could be based at the researcher’s home institution before and after fieldwork. This
appointment is for a visiting researcher, defined as a person currently pursuing an educational degree.
Proof of enrollment in an educational institution will be requested as part of the selection process. The
appointment will be for 3 to 6 months and may be renewed depending on performance and availability
of funds. We are open to part-time or full-time dedication.
